Chester stage the opening day of their two day August Festival meeting tomorrow at The Roodee, writes ARTHUR SHONE.
Chester racecourse have put up decent prize money of £82,000 for their six race card.

Rob Marsh, the communications manager for the course, reports that tickets are available for all enclosures for the opening day, however Marsh is anticipating that the County Stand and Tatts will be sold out before racing on the Saturday.

Clerk of the course Ed Gretton lists the going as good and said: "We are set for a dry day and the forecast is good for the rest of the week I expect that the ground will be good to firm for the start of the opening day of our August Festival meeting."

Racing comes under starters orders at 2.20pm with the David McClean Fillies Stakes over a mile and a quarter.

The opener can go to the Luca Cumani filly Time Control, the daughter of Saddlers Wells ran her best race to date when third to Interchange at Newmarket last time out, and will take all the beating here
The feature race on the card is the £20,000 EBF Combermere Fillies Conditions Stakes over six furlongs.

Trainer George Baker has always thought very highly of his charge Excellerator, so much so that he ran the filly in a group 3 race at Ascot last time where she ran really well finishing a close third to African Skies, she can progress from Ascot to Chester.

The banker bet on the card is provided by the Mel Brittain trained Polish Pride (Nap) in the Surrenda Link Nursery.

I was at Haydock earlier in the month when the filly never even broke sweat when thrashing Sweet Smile by six lengths with insulting ease.

One of the most competitive races on the card is the Triton Holidays Handicap over seven furlongs.

David Evans' charge The Kiddykid won at this meeting earlier in the month at the Sunday fixture, and remains on a decent handicap mark. I would advise readers to have a saver on the Mark Johnson trained Keep Discovery.

Mark Johnson can get off the mark in the Roodee Season Handicap with Nightjar who ran a cracking race at Windsor nine days ago when runner up to Grandee

The last race at 5.10 is the Bollinger Champagne Challenge Series handicap over a mile and a half.

I think this is a race that Nescliffe trainer Mark Brisbourne farms out as he has four runners set to face the starter, of these course specialist Prelude looks his best chance.

I would recommend a little each way on the Julie Fieldon runner Sand Repeal who beat Spanish Diva cosily by three length at Windsor three weeks ago.

Also in the race Woodcraft trained locally by Donald McCain at Cholmondley and ridden by the stable claimer Brian Toomey.

All his form is over a mile and a mile and a quarter, so I dont know if he will get the trip tomorrow," said McCain. "Brian Toomey is one of the best amatuer riders in the country, he came to me from Brendan Powell, and another thing in his favour will be the quicker ground.

"He is also owned by a local syndicate from the Cheshire area."
