WREXHAM ace Jamie Lloyd enjoyed the opportunity of a lifetime as he locked horns with Britain's finest young golfers at the HSBC Wee Wonders Grand Final at St Andrews.
The Darland High School pupil, who beat off competition from a record number of 3,800 competitors to qualify for Scotland, just missed out on a podium finish with rounds of 77 and 75 over the famous 18-hole course.

Jamie, who plays at Wrexham Golf Club, finished a creditable sixth on the testing St Andrews fairways, but the 12-year-old is already dreaming of a golden future.

"I started playing four years ago in the garden and then my dad took me along to some golf lessons and I haven't stopped," he said. "It's the first time I've played at a Wee Wonders final and it's really exciting.

"I know quite a few of the boys from competitions we've played in so it's really fun to play with them here.

"It's such a famous place to play and I'm really looking forward to moving on to bigger and better things and doing even better."

Wee Wonders founder Alasdair Good – regarded as one of the world's best junior coaches, hailed the 106-strong field in Scotland and predicted Wrexham youngster Jamie could one day return to St Andrews as an Open champion.

"To get to play St Andrews is every golfers dream," he said. "It is miles away from the clubs that so many youngsters have joined and the places they have played so it's a great experience.

"In the years to come I'm sure we'll see Jamie lifting the Claret Jug and I'll be delighted they can say I got into golf playing the Wee Wonders."

SIMON EDWARDS was edged out after a dramatic four-man play-off in the
