FIVE people were arrested for drug offences after three police raids on a Chester estate.
Officers operating as part of Blacon Impact Week carried out the raids on Burton Road, Alderly Place and Brentwood Road.

One man was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply and will be appearing before Chester, Ellesmere Port and Neston Magistrates Court.

A woman was cautioned for possession of cannabis and another man and a woman were charged with possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply.

The raids took place on Wednesday. DC Paul Taylor said: "All three warrants were successful and arrests were made for possession of controlled drugs. The operation was part of Blacon Impact Week and reflects the positive response from the public.

"We've acted upon information the public have provided so it's a good result."

* A partnership of Cheshire Council, Chester City Council and agencies serving Blacon have been helping the community during Blacon Impact Week in a bid to make the area a better and safer place to live.

Others in the partnership include Cheshire Police, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, Blacon Neighbourhood Management and Chester and District Housing Trust.

The event, the eighth of its kind, has been focusing attention on tackling local "crime and grime", improve the environment and promote community safety.

It aims to tackle crime, grime and environmental issues, anti-social behaviour, under-age drinking and the use of mini-motorbikes, issues that affect the lives of Blacon residents.

Particular issues raised by residents and to be tackled this week include levels of graffiti, a better cycle track and a lack of activities for young people.

Chester's first No Cold Calling Zone will also be launched today by Cheshire Trading Standards, aimed at potential vulnerable residents giving them the knowledge to say "no" to bogus traders and not to answer the door to "cold" callers.

Cllr John Price, chairman of Blacon Community Safety Partnership, said: "Our local agencies have demonstrated their support for Blacon by contributing to the Impact event.

"These events are very popular with residents because they make a significant contribution to community safety and improve the local environment. The anti-criminal damage message will be reinforced in local schools as well as advice provided to residents on home safety."

* BLACON residents are being encouraged to meet their local Police Community Support Officer at a series of open surgeries.

PCSO John Hurst, of Chester Outer Neighbourhood Policing Unit, will be hosting the surgeries every Thursday and hopes as many people as possible will use the events to pass on information and talk about any problems.

He said: "The surgeries are a great way to get to know people and for residents to get to know us.

"They are much more informal than some of the other structured meetings we run and, if used to their full potential, will be a valuable asset for us and people in Blacon."

Times for the surgeries are: 10.30am-11.15am, Community Centre, Church Way; 11.30am-12.45pm, Children's Centre Carlisle Road; 2-3pm Blacon Library, Western Avenue, 5.30-6.30pm, Blacon Community Centre, Blacon Point Road (pilot surgery running to July 31).

For more information about the surgeries ring Chester Outer NPU message facility on 0845 458 6375.
