FORMER fans' favourite Roberto Martinez is excited at the prospect of his return to the Deva Stadium tonight, (7.45pm kick-off).
The Swansea City boss is expected to receive a warm reception from Blues fans when he brings his newly-promoted Championship side to Chester who he captained during the 2006-07 season.

He said: "I'm looking forward to my return to Chester. It will be the first time I have been back at the club since I played there.

"I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Chester and I appreciated the supporters there because I know they love their football club for all the right reasons.

"The fans there could quite easily support Liverpool, Everton, or one of the two Manchester clubs, but they support Chester because they have a huge love for their football club.

"I'm looking forward to seeing the fans and all my old friends because I spent a lot of happy days at Chester."

Martinez left Chester to accept the manager's job at Swansea City in February 2007 where he had played in 2003 as the Swans' captain.

The 35-year-old Spaniard led Swansea City to the League One title last season and Martinez received the League Managers' Association Award for League One.

He said: "It normally takes time to adjust as a manager, but I obviously knew Swansea inside out after joining the club back in 2003.

"I put a long term plan in place after being appointed manager and we built from a solid foundation.

"I knew exactly what to expect within 24 hours of my arrival at Swansea, but giving up playing football presented a difficult situation for me.

"I have had to make sure that the players at Swansea concentrate on winning.

"Winning promotion to the Championship during the last campaign was fabulous and overall we are on our way to where we want to be - in the Premiership - but who knows how long that might take?"

Martinez revealed he had profited from his short time as a player at Chester.

He added: "Since I came over here from Spain in 1995 I have always been keen to learn from all of my experiences in football.

"My time at Chester was valuable because I thought we had a strong unit in the dressing room and we learned how to be competitive as a squad.

"Everyone remembers the side we had at Chester when I was there and how we became a strong side.

"I feel that my time at Chester helped me before I moved to Swansea."

Martinez is looking forward to Swansea's match after watching his side return from a busy four-games-in-four-days schedule in Spain.

He said: "Simon Davies has adapted really well as the Chester boss because he loves football.

"I'm looking forward to meeting everyone at the club and looking forward to seeing my players in action as we prepare for the new season.

"Simon will no doubt try and find out about partnerships in his side and like me, he will hope that both teams come through the match without any injuries."
